Chihuahuas are plucky little pups – but if you adore them, wait until you see our list of Chihuahua mixed breeds!
We talk a lot about purebred pups here at K9 of Mine, but mixed breeds are often just as wonderful as their counterparts with narrower ancestries. Take, for example, these obnoxiously cute Chihuahua mixes below!
We dare you not to smile while looking at these darling little dogs! We’ve listed all these darling dogs by breed to make it easier to find the one that’ll work best for your family! We’ll also discuss some of the most important mixed dog breed traits for each, so you will know what to expect!
Chihuahua Breed Basics
Before we dive into Chihuahua mixes, we should meet the star of the pairings: the Chihuahua! This pint-sized pooch isn’t lacking in character, and getting to know him is key in determining which (if any) Chihuahua mixed breeds match your lifestyle.
History of the Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is a descendant of the Techichi, a pup beloved by Mexico’s Toltec people. The Techichi was larger than today’s Chihuahua, with the breed’s shrinkage started by the Aztecs, who bred the Techichi to be a more compact companion.
In time, these smaller doggos became a popular breed in Mexico’s state of Chihuahua, earning the mutt its moniker when it was recognized as a breed by the AKC in 1908. As you can see, this little one has always been bred to be a human’s best friend!
The Appearance of the Chihuahua
The oh-so-mighty Chihuahua is the world’s smallest dog breed, standing a whopping 8 inches maximum at the shoulder and weighing no more than 6 pounds. The standard calls for a “well-rounded, apple dome skull” with large, erect ears.
The Chihuahua comes in a variety of colors, with 9 recognized by the AKC, including chocolate, black, and fawn. Accepted markings like black sabling, black brindling, and spotted on white can make his look even more unique. He can have a long or smooth coat.
Regardless of your Chihuahua’s coat, he’s poorly suited for cold weather. He cannot be an outdoor dog and needs a coat for potty breaks in frigid conditions.
A Chihuahua Temperament
As a famous lap dog, the Chihuahua is one of the most well-known Velcro dog breeds, preferring a starring role at your side over anywhere else. This affectionate personality is perfect for those who work at home or for those with a busy lifestyle looking to bring a buddy on the go.
He also has a surprisingly playful nature, so be sure he has some of the best toys for Chihuahuas available. That said, his fragility makes him a poor choice for families with children.
While the Chihuahua’s compact size makes him a favorite among apartment dwellers, he’s among the most vocal dog breeds, which can be a real headache for your neighbors if he’s allowed to yap incessantly. Teaching the “quiet” command is vital for keeping the peace.
Training a Chihuahua
Working on early obedience and proper socialization with your Chihuahua is vital in shaping him into his best self and avoiding the dreaded small dog syndrome that often gives the breed a sour reputation.
He’s eager to please and responds well to positive reinforcement with training treats, picking up commands quickly with the right motivation. Just be sure you don’t give him too many high-calorie rewards, or he’ll get portly fast.
A sore spot with this breed is housetraining, as the Chi is notoriously hard to completely break of piddling around the house. Patience, a proper feeding schedule, and regular bathroom breaks are your best friends with him. He’s an OK choice for a first-time owner, provided you’re dedicated to molding him into a confident canine.
Chihuahua Grooming Needs
A smooth coat Chihuahua is an easy keeper when it comes to grooming, making him an excellent choice if you’re after a low-maintenance pup. Just brush him weekly to remove loose hair and bathe him as needed. Regular nail trims, ear cleaning, and toothbrushing will keep him in great shape.
As for a long-coat Chihuahua, brush him a few times weekly to prevent tangles, with a special focus on the ears and tail. You may need to trim longer ends occasionally to maintain a neat look. A sanitary trim is another great idea to prevent any potty messes.
Health Concerns of the Chihuahua
The Chihuahua is a relatively hardy breed with a long life expectancy, but some health problems plague him, including heart issues, eye disorders, and luxating patella. Dental woes are another worry, but regular toothbrushing can mitigate these concerns.
As with all dogs, you’ll want to watch his waistline, too, as his charming ways tend to earn him extra treats that can lead to pudginess. Be an active dog owner and encourage him to exercise in addition to feeding him a balanced diet to keep his weight in check.
41 Charming Chihuahua Mixed Breeds
Ready to meet the cutest Chihuahua mixes around? Let’s check out these adorable doggos together and learn a little about some of the most popular chihuahua mixes!
1. Chizer (Chihuahua x Miniature Schnauzer)
Chizers are one of the most adorable Chihuahua mixes seen, but they are also quite varied – some look more like their schnauzer parent, while others take after their Chihuahua parent. Unfortunately, these schnauzer mixes are often a bit too jumpy to get along well with children.
2. Chion (Chihuahua x Papillon)
The combination of the papillon’s long, silky hair and the Chihuahua’s bold personality make Chions as spunky as there are adorable. Plus, their medium length coats help these tiny little guys and gals to look a little bigger than they actually are!
One of the other appealing things that many owners like about these magical mutts is their “paint jobs” — these little cuties often feature a mix of colors that’s too cute for words!
3. French Bullhuahua (Chihuahua x French Bulldog)
One thing’s for sure: If you combine two of the best companion dog breeds in the world, you are going to get a family-friendly four-footer who loves to hang out with his people. And that’s exactly what most French Bullhuahuas like to do most! The Bullhuahua dog does have a potential for weight gain, so keep these precious pups on a balanced diet.

4. Chimeranian (Chihuahua x Pomeranian)
Chimeranians are not only painfully cute (just look at this little fluffball!), but they are also quite agile and active little pups. They’re a little more playful and energetic than many other Chihuahua or Pomeranian mixes, so they’re best suited for families with lots of free time.
5. Chipaniel (Chihuahua x Cocker Spaniel)
This is one of the more interesting-looking Chihuahua mixes we’ve seen, and they definitely take after their cocker spaniel parent. Their long, floppy ears come from their spaniel parent, but they still possess the expression and demeanor of their Chihuahua parent too.
6. Cheagle (Chihuahua x Beagle)
What do you get when you cross a Chihuahua and a beagle? A tri-colored bundle of fun and love, who is willing to follow you around no matter where you go. Plus, they’re pretty darn cute, too!
Just be sure to think about the fact that these are vocal pupperinos — they’re aren’t a great fit for owners who live in housing with noise restrictions.
7. Chiweenie (Chihuahua x Dachshund)
The best thing about Chiweenies is easily their name. But, their elongated bodies and handsome markings also make them quite endearing. On the downside, these little buggers can be a bit difficult to housebreak, according to some owners.
8. Chi Chon (Chihuahua x Bichon Frise)
Most of the Chi Chons we’ve seen have looked more like bichon frises than Chihuahuas, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Plus, bichon frises tend to be better equipped for dealing with extreme temperatures than Chihuahuas are, which may make them good choices for owners who like to spend lots of time outside.

11. Chug (Chihuahua x Pug)
Little known fact: Chihuahua-pug mixes can intercept satellite transmissions with their ears. In all seriousness, Chugs are typically very good companions, who are both friendly and dedicated to their families (although they often bond strongly with one particular family member and require quite a bit of attention from their preferred person).
They also don’t have tremendous exercise needs, making them a great breed for seniors or anyone looking for a slower-paced pal.
12. BoChi (Chihuahua x Boston Terrier)
Another Chihuahua terrier mix, the BoChi is often adorned with the long ears of their Chihuahua parent, but he tends to favor his Boston terrier parent in the personality department. This is a pretty refined-looking Chihuahua terrier mix, who projects quite a confident, yet approachable, aura.
Regular veterinary checkups are really important for these cuties, though, as they can experience a variety of health problems, including luxating patellas, heart murmurs, and eye problems.

13. Chat Terrier (Chihuahua x Rat Terrier)

14. Min Chin (Chihuahua x Miniature Pinscher)
If you like Chihuahuas because they are big dogs in little bodies, then miniature pinschers – who are literally big dogs in little bodies — have to be the ideal breed to cross them with. Handsome, self-assured and loving, Min Chins make great pets for families that have plenty of time and attention to spare.
15. Chorgi (Chihuahua x Corgi)
The Chorgi is a great-looking, endearing and intelligent mix, but the combination of their intelligence and energy level mean that they can become mischievous if not provided with enough exercise and stimulation. Note that the corgi component of these mixes can cause them to shed heavily.
16. Chorkie (Chihuahua x Yorkshire Terrier Mix)
Chorkies combine the smooth and long-haired locks of the Yorkshire terrier with a petite powerhouse personality of a Chihuahua! Just be sure to stay on top of your doggo’s tooth care and be sure you don’t miss all of his regular veterinary checkups, as both of these parent breeds are susceptible to dental issues.

This scruffy little pooch is another Chihuahua terrier mix who’s full of confidence, yet loves to cuddle with his loved ones. Toxirn terriers may be naturally wary of strangers, so early socialization is key.
23. Taco Terrier (Toy Fox Terrier x Chihuahua)
Taco Terriers make up for their size with a lively, bold personality. These dogs will keep you on your toes, and they love to play for long periods of time. They do have a strong prey drive (largely thanks to the fox terrier side of the equation), so they might not be the best pick for homes with small animals. As short-haired sweethearts, this is a heat-sensitive breed that prefers warmer climates.
One other thing: Given the small size of these puppers, they obviously have tiny bladders. So, they’ll always need plenty of potty breaks throughout the day.
24. Scotchi (Scottish Terrier x Chihuahua)

26. HuskChi (Husky x Chihuahua Mix)
When you cross a loyal Chihuahua with a high-strung husky, you get an athletic and curious canine companion. These loving pups are loud lap dogs who might take on the husky’s double coat, so get your vacuum ready! Thanks to the coat from the Siberian husky parent, these pups will likely have better cold tolerance than pure Chihuahuas do.
Note that huskies are often escape artists, so you’ll need to have a secure fence in the backyard.
27. ChiDane (Great Dane x Chihuahua Mix)
This unlikely combination produces a mid-size mutt with a heart of gold. These affectionate canine companions will make excellent watchdogs who are happy to protect your house against the neighborhood squirrels. How Do You Find a Chihuahua Mix?
OK, now that you know which kind of Chihuahua mix tugs at your heartstrings the most, you have to figure out how to find one! Fortunately, there are a few different routes you can try:
- Scour social media. For all of the societal ills social media may cause, one thing’s for sure: It’s a great way to find a new four-footer! Search for the breed-combo name you’re looking for and start DMing people! Sadly, people often look to rehome Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes, as these long-lived doggos frequently outlive elderly owners.
- Check with a local breed-specific rescue. There are many rescues that primarily focus on a given breed and associated mixes. So do some Googling and look for rescues that work with Chihuahuas or the other breed from the combo you’re interested in.
- Look for dedicated breeders. Although they’re not as common as breeders who produce purebred pups, there are some breeders out there who specialize in various mixed-breed mutts! Just be sure to start your search in and around your zip code, and then branch out from there.
