Hey there, Sol. Ideally, parents should teach kids the pat, pet, pause method, which completely eliminates approaching the dog at all.
But sure, approaching with an outstretched hand may cause problems.

Just a friendly add on, approaching a dog with hand outstretched can actually be a bad thing, our hands are full of nerves and vessels and a dog being approached by a kid or anyone can also view at as them about to get hit, thus causing a fear response, or thinking you ha e a treat which some dogs take treats in quite a snappy dangerous way allowing them to approach you and smell you as stated previously in the article is 100 the way to go, just with no hands involved. Learned that in a recent Canine behavior course and also almost learned that hard way at the dog daycare I’ve worked at for 4 years now. Maybe remove that part but otherwise it’s all absolutely correct. We teach our clients all of this except the hand part especially the new parents.
