We are in the middle of orange groves. We have a small Chiweenie dog, older about 17lbs (over weight), we’ve always go out with her when she needs to go to the bathroom day or night. We’ve had a problem for a couple months when we take her outside at night or early morning there are a couple owls that fly close & sit on top of a tree, wind machine or electric pole & watch her. They are getting braver by flying right overhead when we are out with her. I’m pretty sure one couldn’t lift her & carry off but she could be severely injured by the talons of one. My husband. Has had to take his hat off & wave it to scare them off. I’m now researching the special vests available to protect her from harm.

Hey there, Dana. You mean like these?
I haven’t seen many people using those kinds of collars/harnesses, but they may make your dog look “weird” enough that birds will keep their distance.

Various reflective materials (like the scare tape mentioned above) have worked for some owners, though I’ve never tried it myself (my gals are both far too big for hawks).

Idiots filmed it instead of saving the cat. I have 3 small dogs and we are putting ropes across the dog pen with discs and old pie pans. There are at least 4 hawks that constantly fly over the dog pen. It’s annoying. I see hawks everywhere, I don’t see how they’re endangered anymore.
