Hey there, Shari.
You may want to try just redirecting her. In other words, give her another way to “celebrate” meeting new people and dogs when she’s excited.
For example, you could start getting her used to coming to you for a treat right after saying hello to a stranger. Or you could toss a ball for her.

Essentially, you just want to replace the undesirable behavior with a desirable one.
Best of luck!

But when she gets excited she will pick up small pieces of sticks or wood chips and tends to swallow them. Then she will often throw them up later. I’m worried that this is not good for her. I’ve tried to train her to “leave it, but she’s so quick about it, that it’s almost impossible to stop her. I don’t want to muzzle her because of the stigma attached to “that look”. She is such a sweet dog and has many friends at the park. What can Ido?

Hey there, Curt.
Claire most certainly doesn’t “explain the same thing over and over,” but we appreciate you checking out the site.
Best of luck with your dog.

Hey there, Valentina.
It sounds like you may want to give your dog something different (and preferable) to do.

Have you considered teaching her to play fetch, for example? That’ll give her something to keep her mind stimulated, provide some exercise, and give her the chance to earn rewards (either just the ball or a treat).

Let us know how it goes!
