Hey David! Generally when we refer to “pups” as a form of endearment — we really mean all dogs! Unless the article is specifically about puppies. I would not recommend the ultrasonic bark prevention tool. It’s best to remember that barking is a form of communication — your dog is saying “this is scary, I’m uncomfortable with this”. Rather than basically tell them to shut up and deal with it, which is basically what an aversive tool like an ultrasonic bark preventer is, it’s best to see what is making them nervous, put plenty of distance between them and the trigger, and work on teaching them that the “scary thing” really isn’t so scary. We have a demo video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBXwaAG_JaQ

Now, if you mean an actual dog whistle — those can be good for working on recall with your dog (aka having them come when called). But it would not be appropriate for an on-leash interaction like you are describing.

My name is David. My best buddy is Bruno, a beautiful 80 lb. mixed breed, what appears to be a short-haired border collie. Bruno is 4 years old and I adopted him in Feb. 2024, from a shelter. He had been returned to the shelter by 2 foster homes the previous year and had been there for 6 months when I saved him. I learned that he was born in Puerto Rico, which concerned me somewhat as I’ve heard that they train many dogs to fight. However, even with Bruno’s excessive anxiety, we bonded very quickly. I described him as part bull and part deer when I brought him home, meaning he is very strong and loves to jump. Since then, I have worked with him almost daily. He loves to learn and is anxious to please me. I believe we have cured most of his bad habits and he has learned many good habits. It’s just Bruno and me in my home, so that probably eliminates any confusion regarding training commands from different people.
I noticed that you refer to your animals as pups. I’m not sure if your training info is only meant for pups or for all dogs. I’m not sure whether it’s easier to train pups, because they know no nothing, or easier to train an older dog because they may know something.
He still has some leash anxiety. Such as when we pass other dogs, people, lawn mowers, weed eaters, etc. Also, when someone parks or walks near my truck, he will bark fiercely. On the other hand, now I can take him to the dog parks or dog beach and let him run with 25 other dogs and hundreds of people and he’s great. Consequently, I would love to be able to walk him around my neighborhood, at any hour, without fearing him becoming aggressive.
Question: Do you believe that any of the ultrasonic dog whistles work? If so, which brand is best? Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
