Comparable to Kind bars but better for the planet and you! (5/5 green stars also), June 24, 2015

I was very impressed by these bars. Clif is a great company too – I’ll explain the green star rating later. Here are my rankings from favorite to least favorite:

Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter: Really good actually. It has a layer of chocolatey coating on the bottom and then chunks of dark chocolate on the top. The emphasis is not so much on the peanut butter, but on the chunks of peanut and almond that results in a pretty crunchy and chewy bar. It has an almost Snickers-like satisfying combination of peanuts and chocolate. (15% sat fat, 18g carbs, 8g sugars, 6g protein) (5/5 gold stars)

Dark Chocolate Pomegranate Raspberry: I wasn’t expecting to love this bar imagining an artificial raspberry taste, but it turned out to be one of my favorites. Having said that, I think it might be better without the raspberry because the combination of pomegranate and chocolate is what makes it good. Worth trying because it’s different. (15% sat fat, 21g carbs, 10g sugars, 4g protein) (5/5 gold stars)

Coconut Almond Peanut: This bar seemed a little underwhelming at first but the toasted coconut and peanut/almond flavors grew on me and I can imagine it being a go-to bar that you won’t get sick of. A little higher in saturated fat compared to the other bars, but since it’s mostly “good” coconut fat it’s not such a bad thing. A little drier than some of the other bars so best combined with a drink – I just had one with coffee and they went well together (20% sat fat, 17g carbs, 6g sugars, 6g protein) (5/5 gold stars)

Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond: I liked this bar a good bit more than the similar offering from Kind (Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew). The Clif version is still a little sweet (it has the highest sugar and lowest protein content of the Clif Trail Mix bars) but it’s not so sickly sweet as the Kind version. I’d rather go with the Dark Chocolate Pomegranate Raspberry than this one, but it’s decent, and if you love sweetened cherries you’ll probably like it more than me! (13% sat fat, 23g carbs, 13g sugars, 4g protein) (4/5 gold stars)

Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt: I didn’t get any little sea-salt hits as I was expecting. In fact it doesn’t have a lot of character overall. The chocolate coating on the bottom is nice, and but overall the chocolate and almond flavors are kind of muted. Perhaps my taste buds are lacking! (15% sat fat, 19g carbs, 9g sugars, 5g protein) (4/5 gold stars)

Cranberry Almond: My least favorite of the Clif Trail Mix bars, but still not bad. For me it was just a little awkward to bite into (hard and also sticky) – I don’t think my parents would manage it at all! I’d prefer to taste a little more of the cranberry tartness; I think they were a little too cautious and sweetened it too much. (5% sat fat, 22g carbs, 11g sugars, 5g protein) (4/5 gold stars)

It’s rather confusing that Clif Trail Mix bars and Clif Mojo bars are so similar – some bars have the exact same names too. The Mojo bars are 70% organic while the Trail Mix bars are 100% organic. Not sure they need both varieties – perhaps they’re phasing out Mojo. I just tasted the Cranberry Almond versions and they are virtually identical (except that the cranberries and sugar in the Mojo version are not organic). So, if you like the Mojo bars you’ll like the Trail Mix bars too!

Either way, the Mojo and Trail Mix bars are going to be compared to Kind bars (Mojo came before Kind, btw). In terms of just flavors/textures they are neck and neck (each has some standout bars). In terms of social and environmental impact, Clif is well ahead. I give Clif 5/5 green stars for social and environmental impact (see below) and I think Kind deserves 2/5 green stars (see my reviews of Kind bars – their whole “Kindness” reputation is based on donations that are a miniscule fraction of sales, none of the ingredients are certified organic or fair trade, and they have nothing to say about using green energy, waste reduction, etc.).

Overall, I think Clif bars deserve 5/5 gold stars for quality (taste, nutrition, value) and also 5/5 green stars for social and environmental impact. 1% of Clif sales goes to either “1% for the Planet” or to the Clif foundation. Clif have offset the company carbon emissions going back to the company start by helping to build wind farms. They have targets for their suppliers too – the goal is for half of their suppliers to be using at least 50% green energy by 2020. Solar power provides most of the electricity and hot water for their HQ, which is also certified LEED platinum; their small vehicle fleet runs on biodiesel; they have incentive programs to help employees use green transportation and green energy at home. They aim for 90% of waste diverted from landfill by the…

perfect snack for hiking or for work. organic healthy ingredients, January 25, 2016
    By
    reshiram (somewhere in USA) –

    pros:
-contains 12 bars ( almost 2 weeks worth if you eat those everyday)
-USDA organic certified ( thank you ! )
    -gluten free
    -low glycemic
    -3g of fiber per bar
    -low sowdium
-each bar weight 1.41 oz ( 40 gr)
-each bat is a 190 calories ( it is very rich thats why i won’t recommend eating more than one a day )
    -cholesterol 0 percent
    -protein 4 gr
-delicious ingredients : cashews almonds, dark chocolate and pomegranate
-perfect snack if you go hiking . it s light and will give you the perfect boost
-very crunchy ( which i love ). some brands make their bar too soft and as soon as you bite through it it either crumbles or make a mess all around you. im glad this one doesnt , especially when i m wearing a business outfit .

i dont always have time to eat breakfirst in the morning so i always tak one of those bar with me to work . they are really great .

    cons : none

will buy again. been buying those for years . i have become a fan .

nice flavor, great ingredient list, but too hard to bite into., December 31, 2015

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
These have a great ingredient list and the flavor is good, but they are just a bit hard to bite into. I don’t know if I got an old batch, but these are much harder than Kind Bars. I don’t want to break my teeth to have a “healthier” snack.
