I just got this bar at Trader Joe ‘s and could not tell the difference in this and other dark chocolate bars. My husband and I are both on an ATkins diet and it caught my eye. I could not believe the flavor. We usually eat the Green and Black dark chocolate. We are trying stop eating all sugar with the growing evidence that it is as bad for your body as smoking. We will continue to eat this product.

These dark chocolate bars are quite scrumptious, for me even better than regular sugared dark chocolate.
But I had assumed health benefits that with a little research turned out not to be quite as great as I had wishfully imagined:
Percent and form of cocoa
1. “45% cacao”: “Sounds pretty high,” I thought, knowing that a higher percent has more health benefits. It turns out that 70% and above is the *healthy* range, 45%, not so much. Higher percent cacao is also more bitter, which is why not everyone likes it.
2. Cocoa (aka cacao) powder has more beneficial chemicals than cocoa butter. This bar contains only cocoa butter.
No sugar added. The sweetener is Malitol.
1. Calories
“No sugar added.” Great, I thought–no sugar. I don’t like the after-taste of sugar and who needs the extra calories. The non-sugar sweetener used is Malitol, a sugar alcohol, and I like the taste. But it does have calories, 2-3 calories per gram, though less than sugar, which has 4 calories per gram.
2. Carbohydrates
The label says, “Malitol has been omitted from the carbohydrate calculation as its conversion requires little or no insulin and does not cause an appreciable increase in serum glucose levels.”
No, not really. An increase in serum glucose is expressed by the Glycemic Index (GI), a scale from 1-100. A higher number indicates a greater speed of conversion to blood sugar and a greater insulin response. The GI of table sugar is 60. The GI of Malitol syrup is 52, less than sugar, but not negligible.
3. One other thing: for some people Malitol has a laxative effect.
Now that I’ve read the label more carefully, what do I think? I still like it a lot. I still appreciate that it has no sugar. If you put one in front of me, I’d gobble it up. But if I want to give myself credit for “healthy” I’ll get a higher percent of cocoa next time and make sure it has cocoa powder, not just cocoa butter.

I wish I could eat one of these every day. They are so perfect. But they’re just a little expensive for my budget right now. I’m not near a store that has them….and shipping costs add so much.
